Norman is frustrating me....

Postby Violet » 04 February 2010, 4:46 PM

ok so..A short while after Norman got here he developed explosive diarheah. No biggy..it happens. Initially did the wait and see..but it continued..started the vet process lol he has been fecalled and bloodworked and fecalled..treated for giardiah in case it was being missed, treated with antibiotics, kaopectate, put on a chicken and rice diet..then temporarily just chicken.. have tried different foods and done everything suggested and the last ditch idea is an ultrasound. Have not done it yet because it's expensive and im already into him for a fortune and all we have managed were maybe up to a week at a time diarreah free.

We have ruled out parasites, pancreatitis, he does not believe there is a partial blockage. I am stumped and frustrated and dammit..Norman would have an official adoption right now except i won't do it without knowing wtf is going on.

Bloodwork is normal..everything is normal. EVERYTHING..except explosive butt blasts that make it really difficult to keep weight on him. Help?

just an FYI...I am waiting for a call back from my vet regarding the price of an ultrasound. Apparently they have a guy who does in house ultrasounds periodically, so she is contacting him to find out what his pricing is.

thanks..i am so frustrated. grrr..his foster to adopt emailed this morning..no improvement. I am just..not sure what to think. And its alot harder to know when your vet is just scratching their damn head too. He is suggesting stress but there is no reason to think that is the case now.

also saw Misskiwi recommend this in a thread for diarrhea...not sure what the make up is - could just be concentrated acidophilus...but maybe worth a try?

Are you sure he isn't allergic to chicken? Maybe try a beef/turkey/etc. and rice diet for a few days to see if things firm up

Diarrhea

Postby cshort » 05 February 2010, 1:57 PM

Canned pumpkin works! I used it for my super-senior Ben and his explosive diarrhea problem stopped within a day or two. I gave him several tablespoons full a couple of times. I can't recall where I read about it, but I was desperate. It actually worked for Ben and might work for you. Worth a try! Just be sure to use plain canned pumpkin, not the fancy kind with spices (duh!).

I had that problem with Rosie. Her poop got to the point it was mucus with blood. Other than that she normal didn't feel sick or have any other systems.
We did all the same tests, the vet thinks it's IBS, the test is nasty so we switched her to a high fiber diet then to a fish based food. No treats or anything other than the food. Sometimes you still hear her tummy grumble from the other side of the room, but she has been pretty good for the last couple of years. I've started giving her organic dog treats or some veggies, since she loves them, and sometimes we pay the price. But over all, much better.

PB8 Violet. It's made by Nutrition Now, 1200mg capsules and I swear by it. Pumpkin, the pure stuff, a couple of heaping serving spoons a day. Put the capsule in the pumpkin and down it goes. It makes a huge difference with Goliath, he has on again off again explosions. The pumpkin is high fiber but also soothes the irritated bowl so...

Had that issue very recently with an emaciated dane. He too came up normal in all bloodwork and fecal, and we too treated for giardia with metronidazole in case that was it. We are adding FortiFlora (probiotic) once per day, Fresh Digest once per day (think I got that at Petco), and MSM 3000 mg split up over 3 meals. The last 5 days we have been diarrhea free.
